Sore Throat: When It's Viral vs. Bacterial — and When Antibiotics Are Needed
Sore throat (pharyngitis) accounts for more than 12 million doctor visits annually in the United States alone, making it one of the most common reasons for seeking medical care. The challenge for both patients and clinicians is determining whether the cause is viral—requiring only supportive care—or bacterial, which may need antibiotic treatment. Viral Sore Throat: The Most Common Scenario
Viral pharyngitis typically accompanies other upper respiratory symptoms. A rapid antigen detection test (RADT) performed in the doctor's office provides results in minutes and has high specificity (approximately 95%), meaning a positive result is reliable. A negative rapid test in children should be confirmed with a throat culture, which takes 24-48 hours but is more sensitive. This two-step approach ensures antibiotics are prescribed only when truly needed. When strep is confirmed, a 10-day course of penicillin or amoxicillin is the standard treatment. It is critical to complete the full course even if symptoms improve after a few days, as premature discontinuation increases the risk of rheumatic fever.
Effective Home Remedies for Sore Throat
